Concilier vie de famille et plaisir de conduite est un vrai casse-tête que BMW tente de résoudre avec son Gran Tourer ! Après avoir investi avec succès le monde des SUV, BMW s’est attaqué à celui des monospaces, avec l’Active Tourer. Apparu en 2014, celui-ci a reçu, un an plus tard, le renfort d’un grand frère pouvant accueillir sept passagers et leurs bagages. Baptisé Gran Tourer, ce dernier repose sur la même plate-forme et exploite donc les mêmes mécaniques que l’Active ce sujet, on notera que depuis son lancement, le monospace BMW a vu son offre s’étoffer côté moteurs, avec l’arrivée des 214d et 216i. Une motorisation hybride 225xe, 224 ch a également fait son apparition mais elle n’est disponible, comme le 225i, que sur l’Active Tourer. La famille, mais pas que… Plus imposant + 21 cm de longueur, livré d’office en configuration 7 places et proposant un coffre plus vaste 545 dm3 contre 427 dm3, le Gran Tourer est plus à l’écoute des besoins d’une famille que son petit frère. Un état d’esprit qui ne l’empêche pas de penser également au conducteur. Reste maintenant à mettre le doigt sur la version la plus intéressante de la gamme. À l’instar de l’Active Tourer, le Gran Tourer est une traction avant. Un choix technique qui ne pénalise aucunement l’agrément de conduite. Pour commencer, intéressons-nous aux moteurs… Jetons tout d’abord un coup d’œil sur les blocs diesel> 214dUn 3 cylindres de 1 500 cm3 pour animer un engin de cette taille, pourquoi pas, mais alors il faudrait que ce bloc soit plus ambitieux en termes de puissance parce qu’avec 95 ch sous le capot, le compte n’y est pas.> 216dToujours le même 3 pattes » mais avec davantage de muscle. Ce gain d’une vingtaine de chevaux autorise quelques échappées en dehors des villes mais les relances restent bien timides.> 218dUn cylindre de plus, une cylindrée plus généreuse 2 l, et notre Gran Tourer commence à prendre vie ! Plus sérieusement, ce bloc permet au monospace BMW de revendiquer des prestations et un agrément de conduite dignes du blason de la marque.> 220dSi, sur l’Active Tourer, ce moteur peut sembler un peu excessif, ici, il trouve une justification, surtout si vous roulez la majeure partie du temps en charge. Le plaisir de conduite est passons aux essence…> 216iComme pour les diesels, on commence en douceur ! Les mêmes causes conduisant aux mêmes effets, il ne faut pas attendre grand-chose côté chrono ni agrément de conduite.> 218iL’arrivée de 34 ch de plus permet de gagner en polyvalence d’utilisation et en plaisir de conduite. Pour ceux qui roulent peu, ce bloc est une option à retenir.> 220iComme en diesel, le passage au 4 cylindres transforme radicalement le caractère du Gran Tourer qui, fort de 192 ch, met le plaisir de conduite au centre de ses préoccupations. A présent intéressons-nous aux transmissions Manuelle, automatique, intégrale le Gran Tourer ne manque pas de ressources côté transmissions, reste à choisir la plus adaptée…> ManuelleÀ l’exception de la version 220d xDrive, tous les Gran Tourer sont équipés d’une boîte de vitesses manuelle à 6 rapports. Comme toujours chez BMW, la commande est ferme et précise. À noter que les petits blocs seront pénalisés par l’étagement trop long du dernier rapport.> AutomatiqueSur les 216d et 218i, on trouve une boîte automatique à 6 rapports facturée 1 900 €.Les 218d, 220d et 220i ont droit à 8 vitesses moyennant un supplément de 2 050 €. Dans tous les cas, l’apport en matière d’agrément de conduite est significatif.> IntégraleFacturée 2 0 00 € sur la version 218d et 4 150 € sur la 220d car elle est y associée à la boîte automatique, la transmission intégrale xDrive est quelque peu… coûteuse. Après les moteurs, les transmissions, passons aux finitions… Sur ce chapitre aussi le monospace Gran Tourer propose un large choix, du coup une revue de détail s’impose…> PremièreEn matière d’équipements de série, la finition d’entrée de gamme ne va pas beaucoup plus loin que le strict minimum. Une attitude un rien cavalière dans la mesure où le prix de vente, sans être scandaleux, n’est pas non plus particulièrement attractif. Un constat valable également pour les moteurs proposés 214d, 216d et 216i.> LoungeOn commence à faire fumer la carte bleue ? Dans un premier temps, nous ferons dans le feutré puisque, pour passer de la finition Première à la Lounge, la rallonge se limite, suivant les motorisations, à 1 750 €. Pour ce prix, on gagne la banquette arrière coulissante, la climatisation automatique, le régulateur de vitesse et le radar de recul. Le strict minimum en somme !> SportEn plus des équipements présents en finition Lounge, la Sport apporte une présentation plus… vous avez deviné ! These are the best ones currently on sale. The MPV segment has been under attack for years and is now close to dying out as people move to more fashionable SUVs. For large families, a traditional MPV is still hard to beat as they make much more efficient use of their space. You’ll get more interior room for the same footprint, and most MPVs have three Isofix points in the back, or even integrated booster seats, and those are features that even the largest SUVs don’t offer. Even though the traditional MPV is dying out, there is some hope in the form of van-based MPVs. Since vans have become much more habitable in recent years, the passenger versions are now a genuine alternative to the traditional people carrier. Take the seats out and they’re perfect for a house move, too. Multi-purpose vehicle indeed. 1. Dacia Jogger Families living on tight budgets need a bit of good news right now; and, right on cue, along comes a genuine seven-seat family car you can buy for less than £15,000. Budget brand Dacia has finally joined the MPV class, and it's done so with the fairly compact but functional Jogger, which delivers value family motoring like we've rarely known it. This car isn't the biggest, cleverest or most versatile car in its class, but if it's all the car your growing brood really needs, and it costs you Fiesta money, how could you complain? It offers five decent-sized seats and a couple of more kiddy-sized ones in the boot, but the latter can easily be lifted out entirely when you've got big loads to carry. The Jogger shares its model platform with the Dacia Sandero supermini, as well as its 109bhp petrol engine; a petrol-hybrid is coming later. We've yet to drive either in the UK, but have tested the petrol model in Europe. Performance is pretty modest, but also more than adequate, with reasonable torque for mid-range hauling, and a tall top gear for economical long-distance driving. Ride and handling are as ordinary as the car's performance is, with a little rough springiness characterising the ride in particular - but it's far from objectionable. The cabin is pretty sparsely fitted out in the case of lower-trim models, in which there's simply a built-in smartphone holder for in-car entertainment and navigation - but upper-level ones offer fitted touchscreen system and factory navigation as standard. And there are even clever roof bars which can convert into a roof rack of their own, for the storage of bikes and roof boxes. There hasn't been a new MPV with the potential to rejuvinate interest in this flagging class for a decade or more; but the Jogger's value alone could do that. Volkswagen Touran The Touran feels like a car created from the very core of the MPV textbook, having been born to deliver great occupant space from a fairly compact footprint. It can’t quite match the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer for premium-brand allure or driver appeal, while it also lacks a bit of charm in it's design. But like all great Volkswagens, it's functional in all respects, offering a versatile and pretty roomy seven-seat cabin without risking dwarfing your three-bedroom semi. VW only offers the car with its TSI Evo engine, which develops 148bhp but hauls the car along easily enough and with creditable refinement and decent economy. Handling is neat, contained and comfortable. The Touran scores no less than eight out of 10 in every department, making it a strong all-rounder that does exactly what it says on the tin with fantastic consistency. Ford S-Max Ford is one of very few manufacturers who are persisting with traditional MPVs, although that does mean keeping older models in production for a long time. The Ford S-Max is now fairly old, having been in production since 2015, but a new hybrid powertrain and infotainment updates have kept it current. It doesn’t appeal in quite the same way as the previous one in the driving sense, the old car's unique selling point of quirky looks and surprisingly good drive having been dimmed somewhat by Ford's slightly one-dimensional petrol-electric engine. However, it’s still a respectable, competitive and generally pleasing-to-drive family car. As it’s now hybrid-only, it’s very economical, too - and with 187bhp to call on, it isn't under-nourished either. Save money with new S-Max deals from What Car? 4. Citroën Berlingo More than two decades and almost two millions sales ago, Citroën pioneered the van-based MPV with the Berlingo, and this latest but only third generation model returns to the original's charm and odd-ball likeability. There are stout reasons why you might buy this instead of a more conventional MPV, too the interior is truly cavernous, with 186 litres of storage space in the various cubbies dotted about, and even with seven seats there's still generous space for luggage. Best of all is that the Berlingo rides with true calmmess and steers intuitively, which along with generous equipment levels for UK-spec cars make it something of an everday gem. The fly in the ointment for some may be the car's chief selling point point for others the passenger version of the Berlingo is now electric-only, powered by Stellantis' 134bhp electric motor and 50kWh battery pack. That makes for a real-world range of only about 110 miles; but if you're ready for zero-emissions utility motoring on those terms, the Berlingo has plenty of appeal. Save money with new Berlingo deals from What Car? 5. Ford Ford Galaxy The Ford S-Max has an even bigger and more practical sister model, the Ford Galaxy. This was Ford's original MPV, remember. It’s very similar inside to the S-Max but for a higher roofline and a slightly roomier cabin, and comes with the same hybrid powertrain. The difference is that it has seven genuinely usable seats which make it the ultimate transport for large, grown-up families. It’s less engaging to drive than the S-Max, but it’s even more comfortable on the motorway and still handles surprisingly well, as we’re accustomed to from Ford. Save money with new Galaxy deals from What Car? 6. Citroën Grand C4 Spacetourer The Citroen Grand C4 Spacetourer née Picasso has also been around for a long time. Its predecessor was one of the market's very first mid-sized MPVs, and while its competitors from the likes of Renault and Vauxhall have long been removed from UK showrooms, the 'Picasso' is still with us. The current model's age shows in the interior. Nevertheless, it retains all the quirkiness that made the original such a unique proposition in a segment many would assume to be entirely dull. There used to be a 5-seater C4 Spacetourer, but that has been taken off sale. The interior might feel a little bit old, but it’s still very functional and smartphone mirroring keeps the infotainment system usable. To drive, the C4 lacks the shine of Ford’s S-Max, but it is far from bad on the road, and it still offers a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains - and an electric version is coming. As far as MPVs go, this is a commendable, albeit not perfect, example. Save money with new Grand C4 deals from What Car? 7. Mercedes-Benz GLB & EQB Mercedes' most practical compact car is a bit of a fusion of MPV and SUV design, but however you see this car, there's little arguing that its seven-seat cabin layout and its choice on engines make it the best model to include for consideration here. You can take your pick from two petrol engines the base-line 163bhp -200 or the AMG-branded GLB 35, two diesels GLB 200d or -220d, with four-wheel drive available on each upper-level option. The all-electric EQB comes in -300 and -350 derivatives, the latter offering a pretty stirring 288bhp and four-wheel drive, combined with claimed range of 250 miles. Practicality is on a par with other compact seven-seaters, the car's rearmost chairs only being usable by younger children, but being available in both piston-engined and all-electric models. The driving experience isn't of Mercedes' highest standard, the car's ride and handling in particular feeling stiff-legged and more poorly resolved than rivals in this list - but passable allthesame. Save money with new Mercedes GLB from What Car? 8. BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer The 2 Series Active Tourer looks expensive, but that's compensated by the fact that it is well-equipped, of pretty high quality inside, and features engines that are clean and frugal. It was the first front-wheel drive BMW, but in a class of cars that are generally lacklustre to drive, this is one of the better ones. Currently you can choose between the five-seat Active Tourer and the seven-seat 2 Series Gran Tourer. The replacement for the Active Tourer has just been revealed, and we should drive it soon. It will continue to offer popular plug-in hybrid power, and deliveries will begin in March. The Gran Tourer is unlikely to be replaced. Save money with new 2 Series Gran Tourer deals from What Car? 9. Mercedes EQV Mercedes has got the all-electric seven-seater market pretty well served between the EQB we've already mentioned, and this the larger and more expensive EQV. Effectively an electric V-Class, this is a big, tall, van-like vehicle with sliding side doors and captain's chairs in the second row than can spin to face either forwards or backwards. It's powered by a 204bhp electric motor and has a usable range of just over 200 miles. And with air suspension and plenty of mass rolling along, it's surprisingly quiet and comfortable, and handles well for something so large and heavy. You'd be lucky to pick up an airport transfer in an EQV - and, allowing for the tax advantages, your chauffeur would be pretty happy to run one, assuming he could charge one up easily. Ford Tourneo Custom If maximising the amount of space and passenger carrying capacity available to you is your number-one priority, you need to be looking at the passenger versions of medium-sized vans. The best van to drive is the Ford Transit Custom and the Tourneo Custom is the same, but made more habitable for carrying passengers. One of our photographers ran a Ford Tourneo Custom PHEV for six months and found that the versatility fit his lifestyle perfectly and while it was never going to rival a Focus for driver appeal, it never felt like a chore to drive, either. We’d recommend a normal diesel, though. The pure-electric range of the PHEV is a paltry 30 miles, which is just not enough for a vehicle you want to take on long trips. In the metal There are only so many ways to package a compact MPV, so BMW retains a similar silhouette for the new model, but has made the 2 Series Active Tourer slightly larger in every direction. An overall length of just under four metres and a width of metres means that it will still fit into a typical parking space, while an array of cameras and some neat assistance systems makes that task easier than ever. The low-floored boot is wide and has a 415-litre capacity that can do its bit for family and leisure life. The rear seats can slide fore and aft and be set to a fully upright 90 degrees to maximise load space. Alternatively, they can fold down flat to accommodate larger items, boosting volume to 1,405 litres. Models not equipped with the mild-hybrid system get a slightly larger carrying capacity. Also bigger are the company's signature kidney grilles on the nose, a once-controversial element of BMW design that debuted on the 7 Series facelift. They emphasise a bluff front appearance that is enhanced by the vertical front bumper elements that are styled more aggressively on M Sport car shown here. Flush fitting door handles are a new trend at BMW that debuted on the i4. They clean up the appearance and have a tactile quality to how they function. A generously proportioned glasshouse and larger wheel options combine with modest overhangs at either end to flatter the Active Tourer's side profile. There are more interesting lines and shapes to take in than on its chief rival, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, though when you distil everything down, there is little to differentiate these MPVs from one another in the shape department. BMW has put its best foot forward with the interior, though, which is a welcome improvement from its predecessor's busy, vertically stacked layout. Like the BMW iX, the new 2 Series Active Tourer uses a dual-screen curved display as the centrepiece; however, there's a more conventional round steering wheel fitted here. As the touchscreen is nearer to the driver, BMW reasoned that there's no need for the iDrive controller, making it the first model since the Z8 roadster not to have one. Furthermore, with manual gearboxes no longer available for this model, there is now a small toggle switch for selecting forward or reverse, which again frees up more space around the centre console. That is a layered affair, with a fixed element jutting out from the centre armrest leaving the sides open, thus making items far more accessible than searching for them inside an enclosed storage bin. There are a couple of cupholders and a wireless charging pad featuring a rollercoaster-style bar to hold your smartphone in place vertically. The rest of the cabin is typical BMW fare, which in M Sport guise includes bolstered front seats and Alcantara and Sensatec trim with blue contrast stitching. Rear passenger space - something that is particularly relevant in this segment - is reasonably good with shapely front seatbacks that add precious extra millimetres of legroom, and a versatile split seating layout allows for numerous different positions. The additional 21mm that the Active Tourer has grown in height benefits interior headroom. Driving it Choosing the right engine for the Active Tourer is something that BMW hasn't made all that easy for prospective buyers. The 223i petrol variant assessed here is a great all-rounder due to its four-cylinder configuration. Over longer journeys and motorways, it has an extra layer of refinement over the three-cylinder 220i. There is smooth acceleration and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox does a well-rounded job of shifting gears smoothly and without fuss or jerkiness. With 218hp on tap, this Active Tourer feels reasonably brisk. Accelerating up to 100km/h takes seven seconds from rest and it will comfortably cruise at motorway speed limits without sounding strained in any way. An ample 360Nm of torque gives it plenty of shove when you need to perform a quick overtake, too, for example. The 48-volt mild hybrid system contributes 19hp and 55Nm, adding another layer of smoothness to the whole operation. Rolling off the accelerator at higher speeds will see the engine seamlessly slip into a coasting mode to conserve fuel. The stop-start process of the combustion engine in traffic is also quieter and less intrusive. BMW was keen to ensure that its core values for driving enjoyment weren't glossed over in this more practical vehicle, and plenty of work has gone into making it a car that is more refined to drive. That smooth-running engine is complemented by cleaner aerodynamics for less wind noise at higher speeds. Increasing the width of the front and rear wheel tracks by 25- and 26mm respectively over the previous generation helps to enhance the handling characteristics. The ride height is reduced by 15mm in M Sport models and BMW also adds frequency-selective damping. That all translates into a car that has little in the way of body lean during corning, so it remains more level during left to right direction changes. What you do feel when driving is that much of the weight seems to be low down in the car, unlike in an SUV. That contributes to a more positive sensation when you turn into a corner. The Active Tourer is a car that handles more keenly than most prospective buyers will ever demand, but it's good to know that it's there should it ever be called upon to perform. What you get for your money With prices starting at €41,325, the 2 Series Active Tourer undercuts its nearest rival, the B-Class, by over €1,100 and is cheaper than a BMW X1, too. There are three specification grades available Sport, Luxury and M Sport, while BMW will boost the choice of two petrol engines and a single diesel power unit with a plug-in hybrid model in time. The M Sport trim tested here starts at €46,790, making it the most expensive version. This gets a decent spread of equipment beginning on the outside with 19-inch alloy wheels, different bumpers, black window surrounds and the special upholstery inside as mentioned above. Front heated seats, parking assist, high beam assist, sliding rear seats and BMW's Connected Package Professional are included as standard, too. Summary This time around BMW has given the 2 Series Active Tourer an interior that looks and feels every bit as premium as its other cars - something that wasn't entirely true of the first generation - and it drives with a level of responsiveness and quality that buyers will expect. The 223i has a sweet engine and it's not lacking in refinement, but when the plug-in hybrid arrives, it could take its place as the default choice.

BMW’s adventure in the land of front-wheel drive vehicles has brought forward only two cars so far the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer. While the engineers are forced to do the will of the bean counters we’re still hoping that these two will remain the only Munich-made models that send the power to the wrong we’re fighting a losing battle as the Germans have offered hints that more FWD vehicles might be in store, with the first one to show up being the 1 Series Sedan for the Chinese market. Whether that will happen or not, we don’t know but we decided to take a closer look at what the 2 Series Gran Tourer has to offer after having driven its smaller brother, the Active reason why we decided to approach this BMW 218d Gran Tourer was the sales figures it and its Active Tourer sibling have posted since their launch in Germany. At the moment, these two are the best-selling models in their homeland, closely following the Mercedes-Benz B-Class which was previously unchallenged in its I know it sounds peculiar but, as it turns out, Germans are not the adrenaline-thirsty, driving enthusiasts we thought them to be, unrestricted Autobahns and all. As a matter of fact, knowing some German folks personally, I’ve come to understand that they are actually extremely pragmatic and practical people that value comfort more than anything. You can notice the difference in size as soon as you lay your eyes on one the tall greenhouse and elongated roof letting you know that there’s plenty of room inside. Other than sheer size, the two look extremely similar on the outside. The front end has the same kidney grilles between the sleek headlights while the rear end replicates the tail lamps of the Active Tourer on a bigger scale. Having them side by side, you’ll easily set them apart. Look at them separately and you might be in a bit of trouble getting them while the two are not identical on the outside, they are on the inside. The dashboard of the 2 Series Gran Tourer is the same as on every other UKL-built model with the BMW badge. You’ll find the same design on the Active Tourer and the BMW X1, these being the only ones using the new modular FWD platform so steering wheel, instrument cluster, HVAC controls and gearshift lever are all the same. And all of them are sitting extremely low, giving you the impression of space and letting a lot of light into the cabin. A special mention has to go to the steering wheel as it does look great, a big improvement over even some more expensive models currently found in the this is supposed to be one of BMW’s first MPVs and its main purpose is to offer space and modularity for its passengers, the 2 Series Grand Tourer takes advantage of every extra millimeter compared to the Active Tourer. Gaining access to them is tricky but the second row of seats slides forward and can have its back rests reclined so that you can get easier access, at the pull of a 402040 folding seats will also come in handy if you want to carry large volumes of luggage or whatever else you may want to transport. As a matter of fact, if you plan on carrying long items, the passenger seat can be folded, allowing you to fit things up to 226 inches in length inside the car. However, if you want to test out the practical side of this car with passengers on board, you’ll have to decide how many people you want to take along. With all seven seats up, the boot leaves you with 145 liters, maybe allowing you to fit two small cases back there. the last two seats and the boot can hold up to 560 liters of stuff, more than inside the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, for example. Furthermore, if you slide the second row of seats forward, you get 720 liters of space, leaving even the Volkswagen Touran, with its 695 liters, behind in terms of room. Folding the seats altogether opens up a cavernous 1,820 liters which can be used for a variety of are also plenty of storage spaces throughout the cabin too. Up front, the door panels have huge pockets that can hold even 2-liter bottles of water, for example, while under the center armrest there’s a big storage bin as well, for various items. The same applies in the back regarding the door panels and there are clever storage spaces everywhere in there as far we established that this car is practical. But how about the promise BMW made that it will also be a fun model to drive, even with front-wheel drive? Well, this is the one area where the 2 Series Gran Tourer can’t hold up to its promise. The UKL platform is a great starting point but not even BMW could bend the laws of physics so much as to turn this tall MPV into a star on the road. The biggest issue comes from the strengths this car extra 22 centimeters in length and 5 centimeters in height have their say. The tall greenhouse means the center of gravity has shifted upwards and that’s never good for the handling of a car. Sure, you won’t tip over and we even have video proof of that but you won’t be having the time of your life inside the Gran Tourer either. Furthermore, the six-speed Aisin-sourced automatic gearboxes the cars come with are not on par with the ZF ones we’ve been getting used to. Our tester was the 218d model, fitted with a 2-liter B47 4-cylinder diesel engine making 150 HP and 330 Nm 243 lb-ft of torque hooked up to an Aisin 8-speed gearbox. Initially, for the size of the thing, I thought it wasn’t going to be enough but this jewel of an engine proved me wrong. Not only that but over the weekend I spent driving it, it also proved to be quite frugal, a full tank of diesel allowing me to travel for up to about 500 miles 800 km.So, say you want to go on the best driving road in the world. Say, the same road, has some breathtaking views and can fill your lungs with some of the cleanest air in the world. What car do you choose for such an endeavor? In my view, you have two choices. The obvious one is an M car, probably a GT the likes of the M6 Convertible or M6 Gran Coupe. With it, you can carve serpentines like no other and enjoy life at 180 BPM. But what if you also want to share these moments with more than 3 people? What if you want to take as many of your friends with you or you have a big family? The 2 Series Gran Tourer might actually be the what I did as I called up six friends and invited them to spend a weekend in the Carpathian Mountains on the Transfagarasan highway. Of course, my group included two short people that were able to fit in those two seats in the back. As I said, in order to travel comfortably in there, you’d have to be around 5’5” at most. Luckily, nobody complained about lack of room during the whole 500 mile trip and that was a surprise to me as I did expect some of them to start asking for breaks more often than so, with altitudes varying drastically and driving with seven people on board, the 218d Gran Tourer managed to post an average fuel consumption of l/100 km 38 mpg which absolutely blew my mind. However, without all the extra cargo, the car also showed as low as l/100 km mpg on the highway, at a constant speed of 68 mph 110 km/h. Around town that figure went up to l/100 km mpg.Speaking of which, you really need to acknowledge the size of the 2 Series Gran Tourer while navigating through narrow European roads. Luckily, the car is easy to drive and doesn’t give you the impression that it’s this big but you do notice occasionally. What also works in your favor are the big windows on all sides, offering great visibility all the highway, the Gran Tourer hugs the road extremely well. The high seating position of the driver and the wide windscreen offer a commanding view of the road, and you do feel as if you’re driving a van, which is rather peculiar every time you look down at the badge on the steering wheel. However, this is one of the most comfortable cars I ever took for long trips. What made things even better were the standard seats that offered great lateral support as well as just the right amount of padding, being not too soft or too harsh but just right. I was able to cover up to 500 km 300 miles in one sitting without feeling tired. Furthermore, the atmosphere inside is serene with wind noise being blocked impeccably while the adaptive dampers made sure we were feeling as if we were riding on a magic carpet, on 17” twisty mountain roads, in terms of driving dynamics, you’d stop short from calling the Grand Tourer a BMW. Sure, it may be the best in its class in this particular area but it leaves a lot to be desired. The front wheels make the most out of the situation every time and the engine/gearbox duo are quite capable. But the sheer size of the thing and the tall center of gravity will make you drop any desire of dial things up over 7 or 8/ the Gran Tourer is not a driver’s car, but that’s ok, especially if you adjust your expectations before you get it. Sure, this won’t appeal to those hardcore BMW fans of old, that probably have shrines in their bedrooms of the E30 M3 but it’s not even aimed at those people. This is, by excellence, the first MPV offering from BMW and it was bound to be less than what people an exercise that will allow the Germans to learn and perfect the recipe along the way. However, for a premium MPV it does its job wonderfully and it shows why it is the best-selling model the Bavarians have in store right now as soon as you try to understand it. It’s comfortable, reliable, frugal and spacious, all the attributes customers wanting a people carrier are looking 2 Series Gran Tourer doesn’t appeal to those in love with RWD but instead, it’s trying to get new customers to the BMW brand and it’s extremely successful in doing so. As far as a choice between it and its smaller brother, the Active Tourer goes, if you plan on going practical, spend some extra bucks and do it right, getting the bigger one of the Appeal - 6Interior Quality - 7Steering Feedback - 5Performance - 7Handling - 5BMWness/Ultimate Driving Machine - 5Price Point - 76The 2 Series Gran Tourer doesn’t appeal to those in love with RWD but instead, it’s trying to get new customers to the BMW brand and it’s extremely successful in doing so.

Happily, it seems to perform relatively well in comparison to its rivals. It has an extra 12cm between the wheels and a further 9cm in the boot compared to the 2 Series Active Tourer. The extra length has freed up room for a third row of two small seats, which can be folded out of the boot floor by pulling a slightly fiddly rear doors and a second row of seats with a quick tilt-and-slide function for the outer seats make getting into the third row easier. And once they’re back there, there’s easily enough room for smaller 2 Series Gran Tourer interior space & storageThe Gran Tourer’s glovebox and door bins pass Carbuyer’s big bottle test’ with ease, as they can all hold a bottle and even third-row passengers have their own doors and tough kickplates make getting in and out of all seats easy. It also helps that BMW has raised the second row of seats up slightly compared to the Active Tourer, so passengers in the third row can just about slide their feet under the seats in front. Because of this, the Gran Tourer’s roof is 5cm higher to ensure that even with the optional panoramic sunroof fitted, there’s still enough headroom. Shoulder room in the second row is adequate, so three people can sit abreast in relative reviews However, unlike in a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, the seats aren’t all the same size. Instead, there’s a 402040 split with a narrower centre seat that neither slides independently nor has ISOFIX child-seat mounts like the larger outer seats. But BMW is keen to point out that you can still fit a normal baby seat using the worth mentioning that there’s an option pack available. This includes extra storage kit, such as a folding central armrest with cup-holders in the second row and various strapping and netting throughout the car.
